TOOLS USA '99 - towards quality software, the way ahead

Eiffel Summit '99

Summit Chair: Roger Osmond, Amalasoft, USA

Eiffel power

As in previous years, the Eiffel Summit will be held in cooperation with TOOLS USA '99 (Santa Barbara, August 1-5, 1999). The event will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 1999.

The meeting will provide a forum for Eiffel users and developers to meet, share experiences, learn about ongoing Eiffel projects, interact with the developers of the technology and exchange with peers who have been successful in implementing Eiffel-generated application. The Summit will open with a presentation by Bertrand Meyer, president of ISE Inc. and main designer of Eiffel.

Bringing Eiffel into the Mainstream

by Roger Osmond
It is no secret that Eiffel has enjoyed very limited use. Note that I did not say that Eiffel was not popular, as popularity can be construed to mean being well-liked. Clearly it is well liked by its adopters. There must exist then reasons why Eiffel is not well accepted. I have my own ideas and would like the Summit attendees to bring their ideas so that together we can identify the key impediments to acceptance, and with any luck, a course of action to remove them.

So ask yourself: "Why did I choose Eiffel?" Indeed, it might be because you are a singularly enlightened being. That's nice. But there is a dearth of such enlightenment. It might be satisfying to some to be part of such an elite group, but we have a responsibility to "spread the gospel." If we believe that the choice of Eiffel is a matter of being responsible developers, "the right thing" and such, then is it not just as much our obligation to increase the use of Eiffel in our industry? If we feel that industrial strength software can not be developed with other tools and methods, then our silence is in itself malpractice. If we have the courage of our convictions, then what, practically, will it take to "make the world safe for(from) software?" Consider this Summit as a call to arms if you like. Clearly we must act, act decisively, and act now.

AGENDA
